Our team is walking to raise money to end lung cancerwill you join us?

I'm Leslie LaChance, a freelance writer, teacher, and fierce advocate for lung cancer research. I have been living with Stage IV metastatic lung cancer since November of 2017, and I'm participating in a grassroots community run/walk to raise money to end this terrible disease through research and prevention. Last year, my colleagues at Volunteer State Community College founded the Litwits, and we are putting together a team for this year's Lungevity Foundation's Breathe Deep Stache & Lash Run/Walk which will be held at Shelby Bottoms Greenway on Saturday, October 19. I could really use your help with this fundraiser! You can join the team to walk or run with us or to volunteer at the event. But if you can't be there in person, we'd be grateful for any support you could give through donations.

Here's why this event is so important to me: Currently, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in America, taking more lives than colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Anyone can get lung cancer, and about 156,000 people die from it every year. Yet, only 6% of all federal dollars spent on cancer research is designated for lung cancer. Think about that for a moment: number one cancer killer, bottom of the list for federal research funding.  Part of the reason for that lack of research funding is because the disease is stigmatized as a smokers' cancer. However, anyone can get lung cancer! That means it's up to individuals like us and private foundations to fund life-saving research to help us fight this disease. Thank you for your support!

Proceeds from this event will benefit LUNGevity Foundation, the leading private provider of research funding for lung cancer. We're making a personal commitment to help them raise money to support their vital work—will you please help us?

LUNGevity Foundation is firmly committed to having an immediate impact on increasing quality of life and survivorship of people with lung cancer by accelerating research into early detection and more effective treatments, as well as providing community, support, and education for all those affected by the disease.

Please join us in our efforts to stop lung cancer—the leading cancer killer—now!
