Breathe for Kathy is the continuation of the fight against lung cancer of our dear friend and coworker, Kathy Fletcher.
To say Kathy was shocked to be diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer at the age of 40 would be an understatement. She was at her peak, life was very good. She had been married to the man she loved for over 20 years and together they were raising their 4 beautiful sons. Her career was taking off and she was thrilled to be in a position that she had worked hard to obtain.
Other than a nagging cough that she thought might be pneumonia, she felt strong. A chest x-ray led to more test and then the diagnosis. Lung cancer? She had never smoked a day in her life, she didn’t drink, she followed the rules, how could this be happening? But it was happening. Because as Kathy found out, and shared with us, as long as you have lungs, you are at risk for lung cancer.
While cancer took her physical body, it never beat her. Her spirit was incredibly strong. Kathy continued to live and enjoy every minute for almost 2 years after being diagnosed. While Kathy was battling her own cancer, she also started the battle to raise awareness and money for research. We are carrying on her work. Kathy is the force that motivates us to raise money to improve the life expectancy of those diagnosed with lung cancer.
